How long should a shower pump last?

We've had a Stuart Turner showermate pump for just under 3 years, and I'm told it is not 'servicable' and needs to be replaced. This was one of their more expensive models (negative head) and I am utterly bewildered as to why it is firstly broken, and secondly not repairable. Aside from the cost, surely we shouldn't be throwing things away after only 3 years.... can anyone offer any advice?

The pump that was here when we moved in lasted another 12 years then I replaced it with one that was left in the garage by the previous owners, that lasted 3. While putting in it's replacement, & following the instructions to the letter, I noticed a plumbing modification that had been done about 5 years ago & shouldn't have been. That was probably the cause of the pumps failing. I have a Stuart Turner now but it's only been in a year so it's too early to tell! I did notice that their new "whisper quiet" pumps are ever so slightly quieter than my 20 year old ones!
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.
  • Current Showermate pumps are shown as having a 3 year manufacturers guarantee so your one might well be the same.
Have you contacted Stuart Turner to see what they say?

  • The one and only shower pump I have ever had lasted 18 years from installation until we sold the house it was in 6 years ago. It was in use at least twice a day in a gravity system with a cold water tank in the loft.

    It may still be working.

It was mainly metal construction and not plastic. It sat on an anti vibration mat. I cannot recall the make.

    What is yours made from?
  • Our shower pump (installed because no gravity to remove water in downstairs wetroom) has just failed. It was put in when the wetroom was built, so around 13 years ago.
