Lampshade hanging on bulb?

This is going to be the most stupid question... so apologies in advance.
We have two light fittings in our living room (bulbs hanging from ceiling ) and want to put shades on them.
The shades we have fit in our previous house fine, but in this house they are resting on the glass part of the bulb.
They fall straight over the fitting, so there is no-where 'higher' for me to rest them on/fit them.
I haven't put them on, for this reason, but would it be safe to leave them like that (touching glass...)?
Or can you get some type of 'spacer' so the shade rests on this instead of the bulb?
I have tried unscrewing the actual fitting from the ceiling on the part that meets the bulb (it looks like it unscrews) but it won't come off...
Any help appreciated!

Post a photo, this sounds very odd indeed.
I would never leave a lampshade touching glass, they get very hot (depending on type/power)Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
Maybe you need something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REDUCER-ADAPTER-CONVERTER-LAMP-SHADE-RING-BRITISH-MADE-/182199308942?var=&hash=item2a6becd28e:m:mK9-3JNr5RPKfVSVccC__dA0

If the lamp holder does not have a shade ring then you need to buy a new one that does. Virtually all lamp holdes come with a shade ring.0
