Bathroom mould: anti-mould paint / grout paint?

Bear with me please as am complete decorating novice.

We get various bits of mould in our small bathroom during the autumn / winter despite conscientious opening of windows etc. We need a stronger extractor fan but also we would like to redecorate.

1. Bath sealant - very noticeable long-term ingrained black mould, which does not come off with any cleane: it needs replacing, that much is clear.

2. Grout - was white / ivory but now in various states of discolouration. I was going to re-grout (which sounds to me like a thankless task) but then heard about grout paint. It seems largely to come in white but have been considering looking for black to camouflage any future discolouring. Tilework is white (as pretty much is rest of bathroom). Has anyone any experience of painting over grout? With a dark colour?

3. Paintwork: Upper walls painted a very pale aqua, what looks like satin / silk; ceiling painted white, indeterminate variety of paint. It is only the ceiling that starts to show up mould spots in the autumn. They clean off quite easily with Dettol Anti-Mould spray but as we are redecorating anyway, we are considering anti-mould paint (Zinsser etc). However, I have heard that because it is totally non-porous, you get a lot of condensation droplets forming - which might be worse than cleaning off a bit of mould now and again.

Anyone got an opinion on anti-mould paint, and would you paint walls same as ceiling?

Dow Corning's 785 is a winner for the sealant.

You could regrout, but I've used baking powder and thick bleach in the past, which great success. Use an old toothbrush and keep the room well ventilated.

I used Zinsser Permawhite silk in my bathroom for the walls and ceiling. Condensation may or may not be more apparent, but it's good paint. I assume you've got an extractor?

Wouldnt bother with a grout paint, your talking factions of a mm layers which mould will easily break through. Regrout, a couple of hours is all it should take just rake out most of what is there and re do. Cost wise youre probably talking a few quid more but it will last a lot lot longer and ive yet to see painted grout that looks ok. Black grout does look ok with white tiles however would say your tiling needs to be a good standard any minor mistakes would stand out a mile with black grout/paint.

I know zinsser to be pretty awesome paint, didnt know about it being non porous though. Cost wise i would be tempted to just use bathroom paint. The problems will reoccur until better air circulation is introduced so its be cheaper using bathroom paint than zinsser.

I think ceilings should be painted white (makes the room feel bigger), and wouldnt paint my walls white (too clinical). Thats just a prefernce thing though.

Dont know how much you pay for dettol mould spray but its just bleach.

Someone suggested this the other day on here. I don't know if it's any good:

Definitely recommend the bleach and baking powder/bicarb of soda combo to clean mould. It worked miracles in the shower in our old house. I made it into a thick paste, painted it on with a paintbrush and rinsed it off the next morning. Didn't even have to scrub. We were going to regrout and figured this was a cheap and easy experiment- very glad we did it!
  • Thanks all, will take on board advice.
Spadoosh - it's such a small surface area to paint, the expense of the paint isn't really an issue. In fact our inlaws might have half a tin of Zinsser spare so it might be free!
