Android 6 mail problems

I am having considerable problems with Android 6, in that I am unable to send mail from my (non google) account, when using Gmail - I am also unable to use weblinks - they are not highlighted
I have had quite a long chat (via email) with google support who inform me that this is a common issue and that it is the responsibility of the phone manufacturer !!
So - next question - which mail app will suit me better than Gmail ?
I have tried K9 and this is not fully compatible with Andtoid 6 yet .... it won't import settings and it won't let me manually set up POP mail !!

I've not used Marshmallow so I can't comment ... I use the Gmail app on Lollipop.

One of the email apps I'd looked at previously which seemed to work quite well was Aqua Mail.

OK forget the Gmail app as good as it (usually is). Look for 'BlueMail' in the apps store....I've not had an ounce of trouble from it and it has quite a few nice features....

POP messages are automatically left on the server with BlueMail unless selected to delete from within the account settings.
Of course not applicable to IMAP messages.

    In other words, use IMAP.

Why not simply use IMAP then whatever device you use has full access?
