Android 6 mail problems

I am having considerable problems with Android 6, in that I am unable to send mail from my (non google) account, when using Gmail - I am also unable to use weblinks - they are not highlighted
I have had quite a long chat (via email) with google support who inform me that this is a common issue and that it is the responsibility of the phone manufacturer !!
So - next question - which mail app will suit me better than Gmail ?
I have tried K9 and this is not fully compatible with Andtoid 6 yet .... it won't import settings and it won't let me manually set up POP mail !!

I've not used Marshmallow so I can't comment ... I use the Gmail app on Lollipop.
One of the email apps I'd looked at previously which seemed to work quite well was Aqua Mail.0 -
OK forget the Gmail app as good as it (usually is). Look for 'BlueMail' in the apps store....I've not had an ounce of trouble from it and it has quite a few nice features....Drinking Rum before 10am makes you
