Buying a Used Car - Credit Card Advice

Hi,

I am looking at buying a used car. The car is a Cat D, and is under 3 years old, and therefore has not had it's first MOT.

I cannot find any reviews on the company selling the car (which is listed on Autotrader) in order to give me additional piece of mind, however nothing strikes me as being dodgy.

Therefore I am hoping you friendly folk could give me some advice on if I were to pay for the car on credit card.

Firstly, am I right in saying that you get Section 75 cover even if only a proportion of the amount paid is on credit card, as I am not really willing to pay the full amount given the surcharge this would incur.

If this is the case, I was then wondering where I would stand in terms of cover from the credit card company if say in 6 months there was found to be a fundamental issue with the car when it has it's first MOT, given that it is a CAT D repair (as I am not a car expert I will not be able to tell this from merely looking under the bonnet and test driving!)? The last thing I want to do is to buy the car to then be told in 6 months it is a write-off (again!) as the repair work was not up to standard.

Thank you in advance for your help :)

Ask them to MoT it before you buy. You can MoT a car at any time.

    Get it professionally inspected.

Yes, you get cover from only part paying with a CC

If your unsure then you need to inspect it BEFORE buying.

After 6 months you will need to prove the fault was there before purchase.

If the repair work is not upto standard then again you need to decide that BEFORE buying. Once you have bought it then its too late.

If you dont know what to look for then a Cat D or C car is not really for you.
They are cheaper for a reason.

2 year old car that's cat D? Have you seen what the damage was?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
