Hi, I was wondering if anybody can advise anything I can try before I scrap my laptop. About 6 months ago I free upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10 and I was happy with the new operation system, ie, no problems. However after about 4 months I noticed I could no longer see the cursor on screen (at that point just using the track pad, no mouse). So I bought a mouse and put it into the USB port and it worked, I was able to use the mouse but still not the track pad. Now the mouse will not move the cursor, which I can see. Therefore all the laptop does is boots, allows me to log in, goes to the desktop and then I can do nothing else. The mouse does work in my work laptop so that is not the problem. Please help.
I have no disks and all my backups / restores are on the laptop, e.g., in a partition but I can't point to them.

Can you not turn off Num Lock and use the cursor controls? It may well be you have a driver problem.
This from a MS website help forum
First, I would suggest you to follow these steps and run the Hardware and devices troubleshooter:
a. Press Windows key + W to search Settings.
b. Type “Troubleshoot” without quotes and click on Troubleshooting in the results displayed on the left side of the screen.
c. In the new window, click Hardware and Sound.
d. In the list of options, click on Hardware and Devices.
e. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.0 -
Apparently a common problem https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=windows+10+mouse+not+working&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gfe_rd=cr&ei=my4NWOvwFonFaIOaiZAG
This seems to fit although no idea how to solve this without a mouse.
2. Mouse Freezing and Disappearing Cursor
A common issue relates to the Realtek HD audio manager, and it is one we have seen interfering with other drivers, too. Right-click the Taskbar, select Task Manager, and head to the Start-up tab. If you see Realtek HD Audio Manger, right-click and select Disable. Now reboot your system.0 -
Thank you both Gravedigger and Norman Castle for your feedback. Just in from work and trying each. Will update later.
Just also to say I had google'd to try to get an answer but was not successful in any of the answers I previously got. These 2 are different so I will definitely try them.Thanks0 -
Hi Gravedigger, I got as far as 'Hardware and Sound' and could not get to 'Hardware and Devices', even with the number lock off. The cursor simply would not move and I could not use the arrow keys to move to the list.
Hi Norman Castle, I tried your suggestions and got the same as above. Got so far then nowhere to go. However, it did prompt me to try a couple of things (nothing to lose) from the Windows key bar which allows a text entry. I typed startup, and through a couple of key presses I managed to get to revert to restore Factory Settings and that is what I am doing. It is doing a total wipe, all files, all sectors, it is at 20% currently after 1 hour. I am happy with this if it goes back to how I received it from the box. I will update. Much obliged to you both.

Thank you both very much. It has reset and I am in the process of setting it up but importantly the cursor functions. Wonderful.
Would either of you have any knowledge if the full factory restore wipes out everything? My thoughts are around when bookmakers install iesnare on your pc to track other bookmaker accounts. So, as an example, Bet365 had done this on the laptop when it was functioning. Would this new fresh build still now have traces of me having signed into Bet365 or would it, as I think, completely have wiped it. There is nothing untowards I am looking to do, just wondering if I need to keep Betfair activity off of it for Matched Betting purposes. If Bet365 see usage of Betfair they tend to limit accounts quickly I understand. Many thanks.

I'm afraid it does wipe everything. You sometimes get a "Keep files and programs" option but not for factory settings. Of course I'm unable to comment on Bet 365 but it will too have gone from YOUR computer, not sure about theirs or the cloud. When the update is done you may look in your C: drive folder and see if there is a windows.old directory but I doubt it. Hope the reset goes okay.0
