Cheapest way to move belongings overseas?

Well overseas as in from England to Northern Ireland, but still the same country.
I am moving to Northern Ireland complete next Friday on a property; however the quotes to move my belongings are huge!
I am getting quoted around £1500 for a small flat's worth of stuff bed, sofa, table, chairs etc. and a few boxes.
Surely this can't be right? Is there anything I am missing.
I did consider moving the stuff myself but I can't drive and it's too long a trip to ask someone else to rent a van and move all my stuff for me

Getting professionals to move you a few miles across town can cost hundreds, so it seems plausible for a long trip, return ferry fare, overnight stay, spending their Saturday getting home etc (especially at short notice).0

1500 seems excellent! My brother paid 800 to move from Portsmouth to Southampton.0

Cheapest will be DIY with friends and a hired van.
If you use a company make sure they have insurance for your stuff including valuable items, ring their insurance company, do not rely on any papers they show you.0 -
Sounds cheap to me too. I paid £1,000 for a move across London!
(That's not quite as steep as it sounds. I had a lot more stuff than OP, and both ends were flats without lifts. I was paying for the labour rather than the petrol!)0 -
Use a Northern Ireland firm
I used dixons and I highly recommend them
For so little, book space on one of their return trucks. Means you have to send your furniture over a few days before you travel, but can say a fortune
Booking space on a return journey is always cheaper then booking from that side.0 -

That sounds cheap! Moving from one side to another of London can be £300+ for the same size flat and doing your packing and helping loading the truck.
I suppose it depends where too in England and NI, Carlisle or Plymouth, Belfast or somewhere else?EU expat working in London0 -
If it's only a small amount of stuff, have you considered getting a couple of large suitcases and filling them with stuff you don't want to lose, then selling what's left and buying new when you finally get to where you are going?
As said above by another poster, if you move everything look at firms who make regular trips and ask them for quotes to take a return load or part load - should be a lot cheaper and means the van effectively goes both ways loaded up which means more profit for the company.0 -

I agree it cant be right, for £1500 its too cheap0 -
Look for Irish (either side of the Border, or just northern, if you are away from the border) firms, especially those who do "part loads", and don't be too precious about when things are collected or delivered, if possible.
I have used a few from right on the west coast of southern Ireland across to Cambridge, and the cost has rarely been above £800. You may well get a call on an unexpected day, saying they are 20 minutes away, and can you help them unload, but they are usually as cheery as anything - and cheap!
Having a sole van or lorry to yourself will triple the cost or more. Part load is what you need to search out!0 -
The OP appears to be moving next Friday, which probably limits their options!Look for Irish (either side of the Border, or just northern, if you are away from the border) firms, especially those who do "part loads", and don't be too precious about when things are collected or delivered, if possible.0
