Card Verification Problems

Over the last few weeks, I have tedious problems with both the card verification systems - Secured by Visa & Mastercard Secure. Is it just me?

I click to purchase something by card, (various providers) am told I'm being taken to either one or the other of the two pages, my details appear and I fill in the digits of the password requested. As I've been doing for years. Now however, the screen goes blank and nowt happens. I waited as long as about 10 minutes on one occasion.

Each time I've then had to call the retailer to ascertain that no actual purchase has gone through. It hasn't.

Having googled the problem a bit, I assumed it was something to do with AdBlocker, so I deleted it. But it's made no difference.

It happens on my PC on Chrome and Internet Explorer, but not on ipad.

Anyone come across this and found a solution?

VerifiedByVisa and MasterCardSecure are insecure abominations. They cause no end of problems. Best bet is to find a card that doesn't force you into signing up (not easy). When I use my MBNA card it never asks, or forces, me to enrol. Apparently MBNA automatically enrol you to these systems, and at least with the card I use for online purchases this seems to mean that the VbV and MCSecure screens are bypassed.

I'd be interested in other people's opinion of the MBNA situation.

Most likely due to a pop-up blocker, ad-blocker, banner blocker etc. or just a slow connection at your end or the server end. On the very rare occasions I use a credit card online and I get a non-responsive securecode or secured by visa page I refresh it and then it goes through.

More annoying are those sites that won't allow payments using cards that are not enrolled in Securecode or Verified By Visa and that applies to me a lot of the time because I often use prepaid cards that are not enrolled in either model. Ok so they don't want my money, I'll go elsewhere!

    It's very easy: Nationwide.

Personally I've never had a problem with either verification system, but using my Nationwide cards means I never will have a problem.

Interesting point. I've never been asked for verification on either of my MBNA cards, Visa and MasterCard. A screen comes up saying something along the lines of 'taking you to MBNA' but I've never been asked to enter any data. In fact, I can't remember enrolling in the verification schemes with my MBNA cards. Insofar as I've thought about it at all, I put it down to the fact that I only use my MBNA cards for low value online purchases but maybe they do in fact have a different process.

As above with both my TSB Visa and MBNA MC. Screen comes up, whirly thing for a few seconds then approved.

However, if you're a rate tart like me it's not so easy to be picky about whether they use a card verification system, especially if they're offering 28 months interest-free, or similar.

My halifax card signed me up for this some time back and most sites do not request it anyway. I have mistyped the password and it still worked.

Seems like a stupid idea and i have not had it popup on a payment page for quite a while.

I've also been having problems with chrome and verified by visa, coming up with the embedded window and getting stuck. I found in my case it seems to be because I had the chrome settings option to disallow 3rd party cookies enabled. I think the website page calls something else (like arcot.com) and when it can't set a cookie it just stalls up.

    Useful info, thanks. Will investigate.
  • I had a problem with Sainsburys a couple of weeks ago & again today with different merchant. Verified by Visa fails on chrome & firefox (the browsers which I use regularly) but goes through on IE and Edge perhaps because those browsers are on default settings, as I don't use them.
