Proof of Postage is worth up to £20, as that is how much you can claim from Royal Mail for standard postage. Go to http://claims.royalmail.com/ to make a claim for an item lost in the post.

There isn't much stopping buyers claiming an item didn't arrive when it did, which is why items worth more than £20 should be sent recorded or special delivery, depending on value.

When I spoke to RM CS I was told that I would get........6 x1st Class Stamps using proof of postage. :j:j

Its been several years since I made a claim, but I sent a copy of the PoP, a copy of the eBay final sale (to show the value) and a copy of the message from the buyer saying it was not received. I got the sale price of the item and the postage.

This shows you get 6x stamps if the item has no intrinsic value, so you need to prove how much it is worth https://personal.help.royalmail.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/319/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xNDc2OTgwMTg2L3NpZC9iKkZUS0Exbg%3D%3D

It is very simple. Buyer gave you money for item. Buyer entered into a legal contract with you. Therefore it is your responsibility to ensure that buyer gets either an item or money back if no item.

You gave Royal Mail money for postage. You entered into a legal contract with them. Therefore it is their responsibility to ensure that the item is delivered or to return your money back. In fact RM go further, and will compensate you up to £20 for standard postage if you have proof of postage, or the full value of the item if sent by an enhanced method that covers the full value of the item.

The buyer has no contract with Royal Mail.

Wow loads of contracts there to sort out.

However as has been shown there is nothing a seller can do if the buyer decides that because the seller wasn't savvy enough to use Track & Trace on their item they'd claim the item was never delivered and claim their money back. A win win for the buyer a loose loose for the seller.

Definitely a case of caveat venditor.
  • I've claimed once against Royal Mail. They refunded me the selling price of the book and postage. I bought a book on Amazon for a friend but sent it with some other items as a gift. I found the process to be straightforward. I had certificate of posting and could prove the book was bought by me on Amazon. It's another thing to do but as long as you have paperwork, not a problem.

Welcome to the world of retailing. eBay definitely isn't gumtree or a car boot sale. Start selling a lot and you're going to start needing insurance for claims (bogus or otherwise), also a Ltd company, and balls of steel.

If you always assume that the buyer is being truthful then you can always claim from Royal Mail or the courier you used.

How many times have you had an item not delivered to the buyer? It is £1.10 extra for signed for delivery, therefore for a £20 or less value item you need one in every 18 to be lost and not refunded by Royal Mail for you to loose money. I really don't think that you have 1 in 18 buyers claiming not to have received it. Just make sure if it is worth more than £20 you use the right postage service.
