Ability for OP's to hide comments from trolls.

What do you do if theres someone on the street saying things you disagree with or if someone calls you a name? Do you call the police or like the majority of people do you ignore them? What about when someone bad mouths you and spreads rumours (think its happened to more or less everyone) again is that something you got to the police for?
When someone calls me a name on the street I would ignore them, becasue its a word and its gone in an instant. When its done on the internet its there forever for the world to see.0 -
LondonGent wrote: »I understand your thinking but the definition of a troll "is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion often for their own amusement."
So whilst you yourself like the way it works, there are some of us that do not find trolls helpful at all and an annoying distraction especially when many gang up and start obliterating the true message of the thread.
Sometimes the person making troll accusations is misreading the intent of the replies, or is provoking further comment by the responses they themselves make. So are you saying that if the OP doesn't like the answers, then people giving answers they don't like should stop? Even if the OP is completely misinformed or reading into answers things that really aren't there?
There does tend then to be a bit of a bandwagon of people telling the OP they're an idiot which can at times verge into something unpleasant, but tbh the OP sometimes merits the initial responses they are objecting to.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

I understand where youre coming from which is why i tend to be quite careful about what i post knowing one day my children might come across something ive written (in the many states that i access the internet in) and judge me negatively for it.
Im pretty sure MSE do purges from time to time on some threads as to free up space on servers. A lot of the posts from my earlier years on here are no longer accessible. Yet some of the ongooing threads are.
Maybe internet forums arent for you. Or maybe you need to be looking for very specific private forums who will be more alligned with your thinking (but ill warn you even those have cliques and specific views which can lead to heated debate).
You definitely will not be able to convince this site to give moderation power to posters.
Consider setting up your own forum if its a necessity, that way you have the power and can pick what you want on it and what you dont want.0 -

Are you then willing to take legal responsibility for every single post in a thread you start?0 -

Hi all, Sarah is right: MSE forum users can simply add another user to their 'ignore list' if they are having persistent problems with that user. It can be found in your profile settings.

You could start your own forum where you can advise everyone on inheritance scams and block all the sensible posters taking time out of their day to talk you out of a stupid idea.I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0
