Red light cameras are exactly that. They work on a loop whereby they are only activated when the red light alone is showing. Yes amber means stop but you cannot be prosecuted for going through an amber light.

Really? Have you any evidence to support either of those statements?

He did stop, but went when red and amber were showing before the lights got to green.

What's so hard for you to understand?

So he wasn't stopped then? Stop doesn't just mean "come to a halt" it also means "stay where you are".

This isn't Wikipedia you know. References are not required here. This is a discussion forum. As it happens this one is common sense really. It would be unworkable to have the revenue cameras going off on amber. It is generally well known that these cameras are activated only on red. No reference needed. You can, of course, provide a reference to the contrary, if you so wish.

IIRC, when I was done on a red light camera ~10 years ago, I requested photos and type approval details, 'cos I didn't believe I did it, which stated that the camera was in effect 0.5s after the light went red.

The photos showed me crossing the line less than a second after the light went red. Gutted! £60 fine and a TS10 on my license, I believe.

OP, you should probably remember if there is a red light camera - they're usually tall thin cameras (about half the width of a gatso speed camera) positioned very close to the lights themselves.

It is indeed well known (and true) that the cameras are activated on red. The relevant question in the OP's case is when they are deactivated. Red was still showing.

On the second point, I can certainly provide a reference to negate the statement. "the amber signal shall, when shown alone, convey the same prohibition as the red signal, except that, as respects any vehicle which is so close to the stop line that it cannot safely be stopped without proceeding beyond the stop line, it shall convey the same indication as the green signal or green arrow signal which was shown immediately before it;" from The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002, section 36 (1(e)).

So what about the OP's situation? This was the Amber light with the red light. (Colloquially known as "prepare to go"). :)

(I'm being a little facetious ... :) ... Yes, it means the same as red only, but I'd defy anyone here to say with absolute truth that they have never started their vehicle moving when red-and-amber is on).

You know that for a fact? More likely the camera is active when the red light is showing (except for a short delay when it goes from amber to red).
Yes amber means stop but you cannot be prosecuted for going through an amber light.
Of course you can if you were seen by a police officer. There is however a statutory defence of going through an amber, if it was unsafe to stop.

Red with amber means the same as red.

There's nothing to stop you moving, so long as you don't cross the stop line.

'Go' colours are not multiple choice. It is green only. Even with a break in driving you should not be forgetting something this basic. Maybe some refresher lessons would be prudent.
