Hand the keys over, if the bill you for more you can laugh at them and say i have no money so take me to court.

Then they get your insurance info and put a claim in and your insurance ask you why you failed to declare it.

Seems we have the answer as to why 3rd party insurance can cost more than comprehensive. Are 3rd party insured less likely to inform them of accidents?

Pay no attention op, it's the way most posts around here go. A select few are paranoid and call troll on every post so when they do catch that one in a hundred they can say told ya so

Sorry if I offended OP, it just had the usual signs. Thanks for coming back with another reply.

Do you know what is the actual damage to the car? Have you got a picture? Depending on the severity, it migh not be a write off and if it's just aesthetic, could live with it.

What car is it? Age? A lot depends on this.

It sounded to me like we couldn't just sign over and not pay, it sounded like we had to pay either way, is this not the case?

I was in a similar quandary a number of years ago after a motorcycle crash (also only having TPFT insurance). Totalled bike was recovered to a local (to the crash) breakers/pound and stored while I was in hospital and recovering from the crash. After a few days I called the pound and they agreed to take the bike in full and final settlement.

So yes - it can be done. Whether they will in your case only you can find out.
  • Thanks everyone who answered with advice.

    All sorted now. Thankfully.
The lot said they don't make any money scrapping the cars and the charge is set by the police. However they did let us just pay the tow charge, so we didn't have to find the £100 odd in storage costs.

So we only have fifty quid to negotiate bills with, but it's far better than nothing!!

On to life's next drama! xD
