Gas reconnection - help!

Hello,
We've recently moved into a new house only to find the gas supply has been disconnected
According to the neighbours the gas supply was upgraded on our street in the summer when the house was vacant. It appears National Grid disconnected the supply but did not reconnect because the property was empty. Our vendor swears he was not informed.
National Grid inform us it will be £525 and 8 weeks to reconnect.
And its getting a bit cold
Any advice?
