Halifax Clarity Cheapest Way to Withdraw Cash in USA?

Does anyone have any tips on the cheapest way to withdraw cash from a UK credit card in the United States? I try to avoid using cash where possible so I only want to withdraw $100 or so at a time. The ATMs I have tried have fees between 3 and 6 dollars. Is there anywhere that is reliably cheaper? If it makes a difference I am travelling in the Tampa area in Florida and River North area of Chicago.

  • Seek out ATMs run by credit unions. Some may be fee free. Google search and google Maps might find you the occasional rare gem.

Seek out ATMs in McDonalds. These are often $0.99.

Draw out larger amounts than $100 at a time. This will reduce the number of fees you pay to ATM providers.

Wawa convenience stores (petrol stations with food) usually have a surcharge free ATM inside and have various branches in Florida. TD Bank also have a limited number of branches in FL and their ATMs are usually surcharge free.

McDonald's, Credit Unions and Costco are usually have low surcharge ATMs.

I've always found that the bigger the place, the easier it was to find fee-free ATMs. It was never really an issue in NYC, but when I went to Ithaca, in upstate New York, I couldn't find a single fee-free ATM. Whatever you do, avoid Chase and Bank of America!

I've seen an American buy just one banana and then get the cashback.
I don't know whether the card was for credit or debit.
  • Do you really need cash - most places you can pay by card including bars.

    1 - Credit cards don't offer cashback.
2 - UK Credit / debit cards get processed as credit cards in the USA.
