High cost of punture repair.

I recently noticed that one of my car tyres had been punctured by a small screw. On telephoning about 6 tyre dealers (mainly national known names) it appears that a repair will cost between £15 and £20.

The price includes rebalancing and a new valve. None of the dealers would attempt a repair without these, in my view, wholely unnecessary extras.

Any comments on these dealers practice?

I've just paid £5 to have my tyre resealed on my alloy wheel. I had a slow puncture. :(

If you have a replacement tyre the wheel automatically needs a new valve. The tyre has to be rebalanced so it drives correctly and the wear on the tyre is even.

It is a legal requirement by the garage to do this I believe.

I remember loosing a weight from one of my front tyres years ago and you could feel the car wobble when
ever it got to 40 mile an hour.

  • I've just paid a tenner at a local 2-bit garage (included balancing). Have a look around some of the smaller outfits.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • find a one man band place in a back street....up to £10 is more like it

the valve doesnt have to be replaced, theyre just covering themselves
  • mine cost £12.75 including valve and balance

New valve isn't 100% necessary but is best practice. Balancing is a must. It's often dearer at well known places because they can price gouge their average fleet rep customer.

  • As has already been stated, a new tyre valve is not a necessity and is more of a precaution.
Wheel balancing is definitely a must though as an unbalanced wheel can cause a varying degree of vibration throughout the car, and will also cause increased tyre wear.
