Trying to see how the calculations are made

Options
Hi, Starting to look to switch and I can't get to the same costs that the CEC calculate. I'm sure I'm missing something, but it's of enough difference to clarify. Any help greatly received.

Current :
Collective Fix December 2016
My Calc
Current Usage Totals
Gas Unit Cost £0.2900 41523 £12041.67
Gas Standing Charge £0.26009 365 £94.93
Electric Unit Cost £0.08684 4379 £380.27
Elec Standing Charge £0.2601 365 £94.93

Total £12611.81
CEC Total : £1758

Best Option by the CEC
E.ON
Saver Plus Fixed 1 Year v4 Online
New Usage Totals
Gas Unit Cost £0.01797 41523 £746.17
Gas Standing Charge £0.15456 365 £56.41
Electric Unit Cost £0.08999 4379 £394.07
Elec Standing Charge £0.6166 365 £225.04

Discount £45.00
Total £1376.69
CEC Total : £1391

So to summarise, looks like my current deal is better that one one being suggest which is a worry.

Agreed - the quoted 61p or so a day standing charge is extortionate for a domestic supply.

You need to check either your calculations or the unit rates:

    gas cost 2.9p x 41523 = £1204.17
    standing charge £94.93

    electric cost 8.684p x 4379 = £380.27
    standing charge £94.93

    total £1774.30

What are you paying for - a 10-bedroom mansion?

As you worked out your original bill to be an astounding £12000+ how can the suggested one be more expensive ?

Please provide full details including your supply region (or first part of your post-code) and the exact name of the supplier & tariff you are currently on. :)

It would be unusual for any comparison site to provide the wrong info, but mistakes do occassionally occur.
Have you looked at any other comparison site? It would be almost impossible for 2 different comparison sites to make exatlky the same error, so if another site gives the same info as the CEC, then that suggests it is you that has made an error somewhere, If you provide the info requested, someone will probably try to assist you.

The CEC, or any other comparison site, will indicate whether you are better off staying or switching. (be careful of the 2 different methods of calculation where a tariff is due to expire soon - the CEC does both for you, as do some other comparison sites)
  • Thanks for the feedback. Looking again with fresh eyes I've missed a 0 out of the unit cost of the Gas so that at least lines up the zeros. Still not an exact match but close enough.
I'm on the British Gas Collective Fix December 2016 which I'm in the 50 day switching period.
The best deal coming up is the E.ON Saver Plus Fixed 1 Year v4 Online. I think looking at it, even though the elec standing charge is large, the gas is so much cheaper it out ways the heavy charge.

I'm hopefully in the last winter with one of those ruddy gas warm air heating systems, moved in Dec, and have pumped the walls with insulation, increased the loft coverage and have a nest controller to gain some sort of control,so hopefully reduce as much as possible.
