EDF Smart meter will not work in my house

Periodically EDF pester me to have a smart meter installed in my house. I should like nothing better, but I have very poor phone signal and wifi - poor signal generally locally. So it will not work. They have been before and tested it. And agreed.

Last time they said they would mark it on my account that my house was unsuitable for one. Now they are pestering me again. Is it compulsory? How can I make them understand?

Just say 'no'. Smart Meters are NOT compulsory and the Govt has acknowledged that at least 45,000 properties may not be upgradeable. That said, as more smart meters are rolled out you may well find that a smart meter will work as they do not require a line of sight mobile signal: they will work on what is known as a smart meter Wide Area Net.

thanks for that. EDF smart meters seem to work on some sort of cell phone signal so will not work in my cellar where the electric meter is. To use our mobile phones we have to go out into the road. Also I do not have a single energy supplier.

    Smart meters are not complusory

As you have asked them previoulsy to refrain from contacting you in this regard, and importantly they appear to have agreed to that requeat, yet they are now contacting you again over this same topic, then follow their complaint procedure :)

Expect an apology, a small goodwill gesture ... and importantly a promise (which hopefully they wll this time honour) to refrain from contacting you over this again.

next year the new type of smart meter is coming out, they use radio wave frequency to communicate and if you don't have a signal in your home come the day of installation, the company who run the network in your area have 13 days to provide one or face a hefty fine.

The new smart meters also have the ability to communicate with other 'communication hubs' in order to boost the signal.

I am just considering a switch to EDF but absolutely don't want a Smart Meter.
