How soon is it possible to change supplier without penalty?

Hi
Now that Eon are not letting loyal customers onto their cheaper tariffs, how soon is it possible to change supplier without paying the penalty?
I am on Energy Fixed 1 Year v19 with an end date of 21st January 2017 for both gas and electricity. There is a £60 penalty (£30 per fuel). I know there is a window but I don't understand the 42 - 49 days bit. Do you have to wait for them to tell you you can switch without penalty?
Is it safe to bag a new tariff with another supplier prior to this window as long as you do not complete the switch before, and will suppliers even allow you to delay the switch if necessary?
My crystal ball seems to be showing me that rises are afoot. Anyone else on this tariff beginning to think what move to make?
Many thanks

Morning Foreversummer
I'm sorry you want to leave us.
It's called the price protection window.

It starts in when fixed term contracts like yours near the end. It's open 49 calendar days before the tariff end date until 20 working days after. During this time and provided we're told, we'll make sure you're protected against any price changes that aren't in your favour whilst a change of supplier goes through. Switches usually take about two and half weeks. Exit fees also don't apply whilst this window is open.
Does that help to explain a little bit?
Thank you

Hi Helena
Thank you very much for your quick response.
You say "provided we're told" does this mean that I have to tell you I am moving myself and therefore wish to take advantage of the payment protection window? If so, is this best done by telephone or online?
By the way, I do not want to leave you. You are my favoured supplier, but I am extremely disappointed with Eon's new policy of hiking prices for loyal customers.
When I signed up to this tariff which had a penalty for leaving early I was assured that if a better deal came up I could change to that penalty free. You even promised to email me when better deals became available so the penalty did not appear to be a problem. It seems as if Eon have gone back on its promise?
Once again, thank you for coming on here and taking the flak - I'm sure it wasn't you who changed the rules.

You're welcome Foreversummer,
The new supplier you decide to change to will let us know, as we'll receive a notification and the account will go in to what we call 'loss pending'
I understand and it's nice to hear we're your preferred supplier, Malc and I have collected a lot of feedback about the new tariffs and them only being available to new customers.
You can change between E.ON tariffs and won't be charged the exit fee, you'd receive price alert emails (if you signed up) for any new/better deals. However, the new tariffs aren't available through us and aren't available to existing customers.
I will take your feedback though, so thank you.
