Advice on bifold door width / space left over either side

  • Thanks for the various replies!!!

The r sole - we can have anything up to 4m wide, so the two options we have limited ourselves to are 3.6m because we can do it with three panels, and 4m because that's the widest we can do.

We've got a pitched roof, doors on the gable end so above the bifolds the roof will be varying heights, up to 3.4m high at the centre of the bifolds (compared to the bifolds which will be around 2.2m high).

Thanks for your view, yes we are almost certainly going to go with 3 panels on the basis that the extra 40cm by going with the widest option is not worth it, particularly given 15cm is taken up by the additional door frame plus a few cm for the integrated blinds.

Thanks Doozergirl - yes we did consider furniture as well and it's a good point, I don't want a sofa overhanging the window either at all or any more than it needs to.

Thanks for providing your measurements theonlywayisup.
  • also the doors when folded will be outside and it is a large/long garden so eating into it by an extra 20cm isn't a problem for us.

    thanks again

You are asking how much of a gap on either side of the doors, between doors and walls....

It would depend on how long those 2 side walls are and if you needed the walls to put furniture/units etc along all the way right up to the doors wall.

We are planning on remodelling our kitchen/diner and I love the idea of bookcases/shelving on either side of the doors so I would be leaving at least the 70cm at each end.
  • Thanks. We won't have anything on the same wall as the bifolds but we will want a sofa at a right angle to it.

    Good luck with your remodel!

I'm just in the middle of making curtains for my bifolds. Glad there is enough wall either side. It's so much more cosy with some soft fabric either side. Will help with sound in the large open plan room as well as feeling cosier in the winter when it's dark at 4.00.

I have two sets in the same room. Both have three panels in apertures 2.5m and 2.8m.

They were fitted by pervious owner. Tbh I'm not keen on the whole wall opening. All that happens is everything on the worktop gets blown about, leaves and other debris come in. I never open them fully. Hubby does on rare occasions, just because he likes the idea I think. I wouldn't bother paying a lot. Also, if we had sliding doors then we would only have two panels - giving a less obstructed view of the garden than these with black joints in three places.
