Npower only seem to have even a gram of 'goodwill' when they are publicly embarrassed into it. :/

Still, worth making a formal complaint stating that you consider it unfair, and that you will be going to their ombudsman if it remains.

Hi Greyroofer and welcome to MSE,

I agree with Fermi that you should write to them and request that they remove it as a gesture, under the circumstances. They may ask you for proof of your health/ hospital stays etc. and in turn you can ask them for more details of the debt, the dates the money it is owed from - until etc. Hopefully, you can resolve it, but if not go to the Energy Ombudsman.

My concern would be, that they have to record accurate data and they may argue that is all this is - an accurate reflection of the situation. If you cannot get the default removed it will stay on there for 6 years from the date of default. A paid default is better than an outstanding one, so if it has to stay on there - make sure it is cleared.

I really hope you can help me sort this out. Apologies for the personal details I am sharing but I want to give you the full picture.

I have a default on my credit file for an Npower account that I never knew I had as I had to leave a property due to sickness – I was under the impression that I had used another utility company and was in the process of transferring but had to move out (i only lived there for 2 months). I did get into personal difficulty due to having cancer due to being in hospital having chemotherapy and the following complications. I didn't receive any bills from Npower but then I wasn't expecting any as I never used them.

As I moved out of my old house and never received any notices for the account I didn’t know about, including the default notice it is now causing me many problems as I cannot get a mortgage.

Whilst I do accept that I may owe the money and if so I will pay this, I don’t believe I have had much luck and I would NPower to consider a gesture of goodwill to remove this black mark from my life. Thankfully I have turned my life and career around having had some of this ruined by hideous cancer.

    Can anyone help me?

    Hi Greyroofer

    Thanks for your post.

I'm sorry to learn you've been dealing with cancer - we sponsor Macmillan so we work really closely with our customers to help where we can.

As you were only in the property for a small amount of time, the bill should be minimal anyway, but if you can send us an email using the details on our profile page with your old address and the dates you lived there, along with any meter readings you might have, we'll get the account amended and see what we can do to help.

    Kind regards

    Jess :)
