Delta US connecting flight cancelled

Hi All, We were due to fly from New York to Washington in August '16 this flight was cancelled (this was a few days after the outage, so not covered under that) which we only found out when trying to book in! they had booked us on an alternative flight the next day via detroit and boston arriving 24 hrs later than planned, we only had one day in washington before travelling on. Virgin holidays will not deal with this for us even though we booked the whole 3 week holiday with them and we're getting no response from Delta! Our holiday insurance, also virgin, doesn't cover any connecting flights, only outward and inbound. Any Ideas what i can do? we are seriously out of pocket as we ended up getting the Amtrak to Washington so as not to ruin the holiday, costing $600 as well as extra taxi fares. Any guidance would be much appreciated.
