Creating a rule for email

I still have an email account with BT. For the last couple of weeks I have received loads of dross and when I go to create a rule it shows nothing in the sender box, there is no narrative in that box at all. I create a rule , delete and do not notify sender if the narrative is not the narrative sent out on the initial email. The result is then I do not receive any emails whatsoever, I've managed to stop the lot ! What is it that I am doing wrong please.
