    Yes because that's the only way they can provide evidence...
    It really doesn't matter. Being liable for your vehicle tax is not dependent on them sending you a letter. For as long as your car is on the road you are liable for the tax. No exceptions.

    I assume it is beyond possibility to set up a paper or electronic reminder? With my memory these days I might well miss some of these things if I didn't get my calendar to remind me.

    Its only £57, so it isn't a hardship when its a surprise.

    I never rely on reminders for tax or insurance (car and home), I write them on a calender at home.

    May want to check when your mot is due.
