VW Golf Gearbox; How much?
Has anyone had to have the gearbox replaced on their VW Golf
My son has a Mk4 W reg 1.9sdi golf that has a gearbox problem.
The garage reckons that it will cost around £600 just to buy a second hand one from a breakers yard:eek:  That's without the labour etc. How do we know how long the replacement will last
Apparantly they are a common fault on the Golf thus making them hard to source.
Many Thanks

Dunno, not had to replace one yet. *has worked in the motor trade for 11 years*
Try find-a-part or The Parts Gateway and see what prices you get quoted...
Labour will be as much as the 'box it's self cos they are a swine to remove/refit.0 -
sounds about right to me..
labour is around 150
finding the replacement gearbox around 400-450
Imo you'd be best trying to source the gearbox yourselves, try a scrapyard or ebay you should be able to get one for around 150.0 -
OK, thanks guys.
I assumed that the garage would remove his gearbox and re-condition it or something
I don't really like the idea of spending all that money on a gearbox who's history I know nothing about, Hey Ho.:oYou're Damned If You Do & You're Damned If You Don't :doh:0
