Wireless mouse lagging

Microsoft mouse has started developing lagging problems and not being at all responsive.
It's unpredictable.Sometimes it responds normally other times it doesn't.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks

Is this the type with a small radio transponder that plugs into a USB port? I've had occasional problems with these when hot-connecting the power supply to the laptop ... seems to introduce interference but turning the mouse off and on seems to cure it ... or when another device is connected to a neighbouring USB port. In this case, moving the mouse transponder to the USB port nearest to the mouse may cure it.

The other obvious thing to check is that the mouse is on a surface it can 'communicate' with i.e. something with a small pattern on it.

Sorry in advance for being obvious, but I normally get this when the battery is running low. Have you tried charging it/changing the battery? How old is the mouse?

This was my first thought as I use re-chargeable batteries in it but even new batteries didn't solve the problem.
Annoyingly it has been behaving perfectly well all morning except for just the occasional lag.
I know it's not very technical but banging the mouse on the desk seems to cure it ... !
The mouse must be at least five years old.

First of all don't use rechargeable batteries, there's absolutely no need to, they're not designed for such low power devices AND the voltage output from rechargeables is lower than standard alkaline batteries. They also have around half the capacity of a decent alkaline battery.

    Ni-MH = 1.2v nominal
    Alkaline = 1.5v nominal
Zinc/Carbon = NEVER USE, ok in the TV remote, but stay well away from them otherwise.

    PLUS they're MUCH heavier.

Secondly you probably have interference issues, they run on the 2.4Ghz frequency, same frequency as WiFi, Bluetooth and most TV/Audio transmitters, so if you have any of the above, try turning them off one by one.
In particular check for anyone use WiFi channel 11 nearby, this channel seems to be the worst for messing with other 2.4Ghz devices.
My wireless CCTV cameras fall over as soon as anyone switches WiFi to channel 11, which is quite often because some of my neighbours are the sort of morons that turn their routers off.

Try unplugging the USB bit for the mouse and reinserting it. Sometimes this works.

USB3 comms can interfere with 2.4GHz wireless devices.

I had the same problem and plugged the USB wireless receiver into USB2 port via a usb extender cable well away from anything USB3 to solve it.
My problems started when I changed a USB2 hub to a USB3 one.
  • The trouble is I haven't changed anything on my computer recently.
I'm just wondering if the problem is to do with one of the recent Microsoft automatic updates ?

    What sort of mouse?

a bit of dirt or a hair can cause weird things(logitech laser)

I use rechargeable in both the mouse and keyboard mouse last about 3 months between charges before the erratic behavior starts keyboard upto a year.
( I got a load of energizer cheap so use them)

I use a couple of regular Duracell while they recharge to check they are OK.
