Device missing ~ Modem.

Hi, wondering if anyone can help.

My other laptop wont connect to the net as its coming up saying "device missing"

When I go to properties it says "Modem removed - Unavailable device (COM1). Now I am pretty sure I haven't uninstalled it by accident so I don't have a clue what has happened.

I have had a google and can't find any help from there so have turned to you.

Help :o

Thanks x

Have you had a look in Hardware, Device Manager, Modems?

  • Yep, nothing there at all, not even a modem tab.

Perhaps your machine does not actually have a modem fitted.

  • Well it did last week so one would presume it does.

I am having a wee look round the laptop seeing if I can find it somewhere.

  • What's the laptop make/model? - the mini card may have become dislodged or is faulty......

  • Its a Packard Bell Easynote (I think its an MZ)

I think I am going to give in and just get a new router (thats broke too )

  • Here is a link to the modem driver - modem
Download then run and install it (it's for XP SP2)

Try that and get back to us...we can try other stuff from there!

BTW - it is a dial up modem your trying to use? Internal?
Just that you mention a router as well......!

  • Thanks, I will have to burn that to disk tommorow and do it then.

Its a long story to be honest, so the short version.

Its an internal yes, it was there before as I have used it for dial up but the other day I tried to use dial up as I lost my broadband and it came up saying the above.

Since losing my broadband and getting it back, I cannot login or connect to my router wired or wireless. I have even taken it back to factory settings and no luck as the LAN ports don't seem to be detecting my ethernet cable.

As I don't need a modem in my laptop when going wireless I think (after trying the above update) I will just have to buy another router.
