Who owns my gas pipes?
Options
A couple of weeks ago we were woken in the early morning by our CO2 monitor going off. I called the gas emergency number and the chap came and said it was the battery in the monitor and there was no leak. He also said that our gas pipes were old and he would put in a report to say they neeeded repalcing. He said at the same time they might move the meter outside ( which would be ideal as we are having a new kitchen and it is in a kitchen cupboard ). Anyway we heard no more and last week the B & Q man came to measure the kitchen and said he smelt gas. I called the Gas line again and they came and had to fit a new meter with the gas still switched on. When I mentioned the pipes to him he said no way would they replace them unless I paid.
Today I called the company responsible for the gas pipes to ask what the position was and they said firstly that the first man had not put in a report and secondly that only the pipes outside the property were their responsibility and we were responsible for the pipes inside the property. Can anybody clarify who is responsible for what and if we have to pay for new pipes?

Depending on who owns your meter...99% of the time it will be National Grid Metering (Transco). The pipes up too the meter are their responsibilty, and if they are old and need replaced, I would not think that you would be made to foot the bill. Give NGM a call...I am sure they will steer you in the right direction.0
