I'm building a couple of computers for friends and family for crimbo.

    At the minute for ~£800 i'd be looking for a 4th generation i5 or i7, e.g. 4690k or 4790k and a z97 motherboard

or i5 6600 and suitable mb but will be more expensive for marginal gains.

8gb ram - people are going to say get 16gb but I've checked and in most AAA games it makes 1fps of difference and you can add more later as it take less than a minute to install.

I'd get all the above 2nd hand from eBay or Gumtree for less than £350

256gb SSD (dont bother with any less it will fill up way to fast) £60

1-2tb HD - £40-£50, maybe even used from an amazon warehouse deal.

GTX 1060 6gb seems to be the sweet spot at the minute for price/performance. A 5 year warranty Zotac one from amazon is currently £230. You're getting the same power as gtx 980 in most games.

    Case £35
    Bronze rated PSU £40
    k+m £16
    Headset £14
    wifi £10
Optional evo 212x heatsink or stick with stock cooler and then upgrade and overclock in a couple of years time.

You can buy legit windows 10 key for less than £20 if you know where to look. Any find someone with 1/2 a braincell to push all the bits together. Barely even need a screwdriver now to build a pc.

I've a 750w gold tier one psu and looking back, what a waste of money it was.

For a massive overclocked rig with a 780ti or 980ti I'd spend a bit more but These 1060 gfx cards use so little current that a 500w psu is overkill. Should be able to get a decent branded tier 2 psu for £40 but prices have spiked thanks to the weak pound.

Something to consider I suppose if going for a beefier gpu

Do you referring to Tomshardware teir?

Have you allow room for OC/ upgrade of higher end GPU?
I would probably getting EVGA 500B or Corsair CX500 instead for extra £10
