Holiday insurance covering costs if we have to cancel holiday

Hi all,
Im looking to go on a fairly expensive holiday next year. Is there insurance I can get to protect me should I not be able to go at the last minute? I have a friend who recently had a family emergency and couldnt go on holiday and they lost all the money they spent on planes and accommodation.

Any travel insurance will cover cancellation for a range of reasons but with certain exclusions like prior medical conditions.

If the family emergency related to someone who was not travelling with them then the reason may need to be something that could not be anticipated when the insurance was taken out unless declared to the insurance company when taking out the policy.

For example, if a relative had a heart condition and had a heart attack before you went they may not cover that.
