Ok, I know it's a hostel but they have private rooms and it's a really good location. It's clean, not full of kids, when I stayed a few years ago lots of people were older/ retired. Have a read of the reviews before you dismiss it even though it's technically a hostel https://www.yha.com.au/hostels/nsw/sydney-surrounds/sydney-harbour/?gclid=CIDg0aKC288CFdQ_GwodBKwESg

The problem of course, is the price. Typically AU$185(£118). So you are really paying for the location. Of course nothing wrong with that.

My son and his girlfriend have just booked the Vulcan for around £100 per room per night. http://vulcanhotel.com.au. See if that fits the bill.

Being in their early twenties they were also looking for something reasonably priced within Sydney. They managed to save a further £30 off their three night stay by booking with Expedia and googling a discount code.

Other options might be looking at areas two or three rail stops outside of the CBD.

Gosh, you don't get much space for your money. 18 sq. m. is hardly spacious, as they describe.
The last time we were there, we got a special offer on Fraser Suites through Agoda.
Prices appear to have risen considerably since then.

I may give AirBnB a go next time, as I like the idea of an apartment with outside space, for the price of a poky hotel room.

Perhaps the OP can get a poky apartment for half the price of a poky hotel room.. by clicking on my link and sliding the maximum price downwards after putting their dates in.
