Buenos Aires anyone?

Options
It's my 30th birthday at the end of January 2008, and I'm 'helping' the boyfriend choose a nice destination :) Ireland was the main choice up til now (countryside, not Dublin). After reading a book though, I'm quite inspired by Buenos Aires, and the cheapness of accomodation/eating out won't go amiss either. I've worked out the flights would be about £600 each  and then a 3 star hotel for about £3-400 for a 2 week period. All sounding rather out of our budget, but you're only 30 once... Does anyone have any particular thoughts, my main concern is that 2 weeks is a long time in one city, but there's no way I'd spend that long on a plane for one week...

Thanks in advance for any pearls of wisdom:D

I would love to visit BA, and I'm sure that there is enough of interest to keep you busy for two weeks (or more). But don't forget that Argentina is a vast country, with regions of outstanding natural beauty. All sorts of excursions are available to BA: a boat trip across the river to Uruguay, or even a visit to a spectacular waterfall across the border in Brazil. So don't book the hotel for the full two weeks, since you might want to spend some nights out of town.
  • BA is a great place, fly in and out, but take internal flights too. Iguazu and Perito Merino are well worth seeing, as is the trip over the andes into Chile from Mendoza. Its a great country, the best steaks you'll ever eat for next to nothing swilled down with some delicious malbec. The whale watching from Puerto Madryn is the best I've seen, orcas too.
  • So how much would you say roughly for a meal for 2? And yes, the steak and Malbec sounds perfect!
  • This is where we stayed. If the link works, a very nice b and b, in a nice area. Taxis are very cheap. I'm not sure of the cost of a steak now. If you go to a Parilla ( asado) you can eat as much as you want. The locals eat the whole beast too, starting with the offal. You don't have to.

I don't know if this would work, but you might be able to make use of the BMI credit card miles (20,000 miles when you get their credit card). With their partners you could use the miles to get a free/cheap flight from USA, or possibly even from UK. You might have to go part cash part miles if you don't have time to build up extra miles though. Then you could get a cheapie flight to New York, and transfer from there.

If you think that might work for you, you'd be best asking on http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/index.php Flyertalk, they know all the ins and outs of miles schemes.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • Good idea Pboae. If you go with British Airways then the flights have a stop off in Sau Paolo where you cannot get off before it gets to BA. Somedays it goes to Rio instead of BA. It's a long flight aswell! Iberia and Air France both fly without stops I think, apart from the one in Spain or France to catch the flight.

We had 3 nights there when we went to Antarctica this year and the weather was great in January, not overpowering either. We stayed in a hotel just accross the road from the train station and harbour and was fine. We wlaked about with no problem either. It was really cheap aswell, I think we paid less than a fiver for 2 main meals and 2 drinks at a lovely restaurant near the hotel and the food was lovely.

If I could suggest a few days away then I would definately go back to Ushuaia (if it was me) as it was the nicest town we have been to in ages. There was quite a few things to do aswell when we were there.
