Replacement sofa cheaper can I get price difference refunded?

Options
Long story short, I bought 2 matching sofas from Ikea in July 2014, in just over 2 years they have developed the same fault 3 times. As they were under a 10 guarantee Ikea came out twice to repair them. When another spring broke last weekend I emailed and asked for replacements of a different design, and Ikea have been brilliant and agreed to this straight away. I don't want the same design again given the problems that we've had with our current sofas, however looking on the website there is only one other sofa design that I like which comes in the right colour to match my decor. The only thing is that they cost £100 each less than my original sofas. I've sent a cheeky email requesting these as replacements and asking if I'd qualify for a credit note or voucher for the price difference, but I'm not sure where I actually stand in terms of my consumer rights - is this something that I'm entitled to?

If you are having them replaced under the terms of the guarantee, you would need to see what that said about picking an item that had a different value.

As said, you are entirely reliant on the terms of their guarantee.

Anything more than that is down to goodwill.
  • This is what the guarantee states:

What will IKEA do to correct the problem?
IKEA will examine the product and decide, at its sole discretion,
if it is covered under this Limited Warranty. If considered covered,
IKEA through its own service operations, will then, at its sole
discretion, either repair the defective product or replace it with the
same or a comparable product. If it is covered by this Limited w\
Warranty, IKEA will pay the costs of repairs, spare parts, labor and
travel for repair staff, that IKEA incurs, provided that the product is
accessible for repair without special expenditure. This does not
apply to any repair work not authorized by IKEA. Replaced parts
    become the property of IKEA.
If the item is no longer sold by IKEA, IKEA will provide an
appropriate replacement. It is IKEA that determines, at its sole
discretion, what constitutes an appropriate replacement.

So I guess I'll have to wait and see what they say in reply to my email - nothing definitive there!

They appear to specify the customer pays the difference if its more expensive but do not say anything about a refund.

OP should definitely ask (you dont ask, you definitely wont get) but if they say no OP, at least console yourself that you've effectively paid just £200 for 2 years use of the old suite and have a brand new suite for £x (whatever the remaining balance is).
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
