First time ever Back up.

I need to back up my PC
I've bought several programmes and I would like to back these up on an external drive.
I'd like some of my folders to be saved as well.

Do I just plug in a drive and press back up.

Advice would be appreciated.

    If you have bought an external drive (as opposed to a USB stick) it probably came with its own software. When you plug in the external drive it normally will fire up its software and ask you what you wan to do and which programmes, folders and files you want to back up.

    I bought a portable drive to back up. I used the software provided and went through the back up of Win 7 but gave me problems.

    So then decided the best way to ignore the software and copy and paste in the portable drive.

    For most users, going to C:\users\ and copying the %username% folder to a backup drive, will suffice.

    For people who don't use the standard file save locations (like me), things are a bit more tricky.
