:eek::eek: That's terrible advice! Take the £5000 vet bill on a credit card? No way should the OP do that?!

Why not? If the dog needs the op then they need to find a way to pay for it. Responsible owners don't leave animals without veterinary care for financial reasons.
  • Because that's how much it costs.

You're so shielded from reality by the NHS that you don't appreciate how much medical care actually costs and that everyone else is paying to fund your care.

In the US, a human hip replacement would be at least $30-45K and you'd have to find that money yourself if you didn't already pay several hundred dollars in health insurance every month.

My average everyday doctor charges $120 just for an appointment. I once had a blood test after a nasty tick bite and the cost was $500 on top of that $120. Just for a quick blood test.

Still think vets are overcharging? That's the real world cost.
That's what you'd be paying without the NHS.

Anyone else see that bill a new dad posted on the internet that was received after his child was born by c-section?

The total cost was $13,000 with $40 being charged so that the mum could hold the baby after it was born!

And be aware that there is a good chance that it will need a second hip replacement in the next few years - rarely will it be only one hip that is problematic.

Not really. It is the cruciate that seems to go within 6 month of the other, not hips.

The reasons vets charge so much may be valid but why then are they so much cheaper in France?

To the OP, what about a just giving page or putting something on facebook. What breed is your dog? If there is a facebook page on facebook for that breed you may get advice or people willing to help with a bill.

I know a couple of people with the same breed dog as me that had help paying massive bills through facebook
