Ryanair cabin baggage- how strict

OK! IM not taking the kitchen sink away. Travelling as a couple with 2 cabin bags. Going out with Monarch, no problems as both are bags are within their measurements. But coming back with Ryanair, their measurements are different. They state 55x40x20. Our 2 bags are 55x40x22. I know it's only 2cm over and in the grand scheme of things, is minute. But if the bags have to fit in a measuring guide, chances are that they might not go in as they are both hard bodied bags. So, DO Ryanair put your bags in a measuring guide? If not, how likely is it that they would refuse these bags? Once flew with Easyjet and even though they have measurement restrictions, they didn't seem to enforce it. People were taking quite large bags on.

Pot luck I'm afraid. Flown with them many times and have seen people charged for overweight and over sized bags at the departure gate...on other occasions they just scan your boarding card and usher you aboard.

Really depends how full the flight is. Flown 8 times with Ryanair. 7 of those I've seen plenty of oversized bags allowed on but on a recent fully booked flight from Dublin to London they were checking bags. I saw a large but soft sided bag was able to be jammed into the measuring guide but another case with a hard base and large wheels just wouldn't go. Think the cost was £50/€50.

Luck: just to add, on one flight with them I saw several people being asked to put their bags into a measuring guide (and being charged for minute size differences) but they didn't bother with me, although my bag was probably slightly over-sized (but was soft and so I could probably have squashed it into the guide).

They may be "hard bodied" bags but if i was caught and forced to pay £50/£100 i would stand on the bags to permanantly push in the sides, yeah, wreck the cases and buy 2 correct bags for my next trip.......Will they push in?.......

The charity shop does not have to be the "correct" size, any size shop will do!

My experience (earlier this year) when flying out they didn't even look at the hand luggage, but flying back from Crete they not only had those silly cages at the boarding gate but also tape measures and were actively enforcing the measurements by going down the queue checking anything that looked even slightly over.
As other people have said im afraid it depends on lots of things. I wouldn't risk it but ymmv.

I've flown Ryanair quite a bit over the years. In more recent times they definitely seem to have relaxed their attitude.

Good job too seeing the size some people take these days. All they seem to do now, is put a sticker on the larger looking ones and put them in the hold for free, especially on the way back when everybody has their second bag of duty free.

Home bargains are doing a basic cabin bag for £9. Probably not brilliant for that price but would work for one trip.
