Should I start my own car insurance or stay as a named driver?

Dear All,

I am currently the named main driver for my own car as well as a named driver on our other 2 cars on my husband's car insurance policy.

My query is should I be starting my own insurance or should I stay as a named driver? What are the benefits of both?

Thank you in advance.

The main benefit of having a policy in your own name is building up your own NCD. (Especially useful should you and husband split up!)

The disadvantage is that you will normally start on zero NCD (though usually you get an introductory discount if you have a claim free history).

Some insurers do give named drivers NCD as a marketing exercise (you must buy a policy off the same company to be able to use named driver NCD) - do any of your 3 policies offer this?

    Hi Quentin,

Many thanks for your reply. The policies are currently with NFU so I will look into them in regards to the NCB.
