ECC/ Non-ECC??

Options
Hi all, thanks for the responses previous, just have a quick question...
The computer i am trying to add memory to is a Packard Bell Pulsar 500, 450mhz, which crucial says i need 168pin DIMM SDRAM, i understand that much. However what is the difference between pc 133 and pc 100, also what is ECC/ non-ECC??
Any help once again much appreciated. J

PC133 is capable of running at faster bus speeds than PC100.

Short for Error-Correcting Code memory, a type of memory that includes special circuitry for testing the accuracy of data as it passes in and out of memory.

ECC memory is found mainly in high end server and the like. You'll need non-ECC in your PC.
  • Don't suppose anyone knows whether my Compaq EVO D300 uses EEC or not?

Depends on how old the Compaq is - they used to use parity or ECC. If you run the system analyser at the Crucial site it should tell you what you need.

it will most likely be non-ecc as ecc stuff is normally used in servers and workstations etc.

to double check put in ur system info at https://www.crucial.com/uk on their config and find ram thing

hope u get the right stuff

mind, the pc133 ram is now quite obsolete and thus very expensive, and depending on ur system requirements you may want to consider a whole pc upgrade?!

  • Unfortunately the scanner at Crucial was unable to determine my memory requirements. I do not have a manual or any stickers on the machine to determine the exact model either (it was purchased refurbished)! There is a COMPAQ SERIAL NUMBER any idea if I can enter this anywhere and discover the exact specification of the PC? Also, the motherboard says P133MHZ SDRAM is only to be used.

    How confusing!

    Thanks for any assistance

  • Try Kingston, another supplier who also has a guide on the site.

Ok so the RAM you will need is PC133 Non-ECC stuff.

The cheapest place, and you will be getting quite cheap RAM is https://www.pless.com they normally have some good prices, however the RAM will be super budget, but as it isn't the highest spec PC, you won't need it for performance, if however after inserting more RAM your PC does slow down or starts crashing more often, remove the RAM and see if this solves the problem and you will have send back the RAM (this could happen with any type of RAM tho tbh, say if the mobo is overly piccy).

Also it depends on what OS you are using, i am guessing you are using Microsoft Windows, just what version are you using?

With the serial number to the COMPAQ PC just enter it in google and something should pop up! ;) Can i ask you what you use your PC for? As older RAM can cost about £50 (or even more) for the PC133 NON-ECC stuff you are looking for.

    Happy searching

  • Just a quick thank you to everyone. I found https://www.pless.co.uk to be pretty helpful. However entering the serial number into Google returned no hits! I actually started a new thread as I wasn't sure people would find this one!

I use my PC for general word processing mainly. But I also dabble with image editing software, Corel Draw and music production software so could do with the ram. Currently running XP PRO!

    Thanks everyone

ps. is this compatible does anyone think?http://www.eclipsecomputers.com/product.aspx?code=MED-5123M
