    My password IS correct
I have manually copied all of my contacts across to my new phone now
but even now - on the new phone - I am unable to sync any data
I still get "SYNC IS CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS. IT WILL BE WORKING AGAIN SHORTLY"
Could this be linked to the fact that I am using the same Google account on two different devices ?
    a tablet and a phone

No. Google works on multiple devices.

Your Data or Wifi switched ON on both devices?

Sign Out and In again on new device
