National Express Senior travel

Hi,
I'm confused (perhaps deliberately) by the National Express site. If I go for travel as a senior, but without a travelcard, the cost is lower than as an adult - but there is no info on what proof is required, only details of the card which I don't need.
It says "senior" is 60+ and adult is 18-59, but has anyone actually purchased tickets as a senior without the travelcard?
TIA for any help
