Odd Return Policy?

Options
Hi Folks,

(Tried searching for an answer to this question but got back 100's of possibilities due to the vagueness of the search term)

I bought a mobile phone cover for the missus's phone last month, case arrived in good time but did not fit the wife's phone as it wasn't for the exact make of the mobile phone (i.e. my fault for not checking properly).

I contacted the company i bought the cover from and initiated a return, the return basically says the following

You must use this return label (and no other return method) which will cost £3 to return and you will be charged £3.50 if the package has been opened (which it has)

Are companies allowed to do this? I've returned many items in the past and always got a full refund with no shipping costs (i normally buy via Amazon / John Lewis etc)

Given that this is a distance sale then yes they can charge you the return costs as long is this outlined in their T&Cs (given to you in a durable form). TBH, it's not uncommon, and it's either that or you organise and pay for the return yourself.

They can also make an deduction if the value of the goods has been reduced as a result of you handling the goods more than was necessary to determine their function and suitability. In this case if you purchased the wrong case was it really necessary to open the internal packaging?
