Hi all,
My boyfriend has recently become pescetarian. We've mainly been eating veggie as neither of us really knows what to do with fish!
I tend to prefer less 'fishy' fish, and would like a fish that I can flavour quite easily. I was wondering if anyone has any favourite fish fish and/or recipes along these lines? If it was up to me, I would like to try a fish curry but my bf doesn't like curry so unfortunately that's not really an option.
I was also wondering where is best to buy reasonably priced fish - I have all the major supermarkets nearby and a Lidl, but sadly not an Aldi.

I love mackerel, so can't help you there, but my favourite blander fish recipe is sweetcorn soup:

I find smoked fish gives a nice body to most fish dishes.
If you liked the idea of a fish curry, but the OH doesn't like curry, have you considered a compromise?

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Salmon is versatile and good value considering its nutritional content.
It takes on flavours well and can be cooked in the oven, grilled, pan fried etc. Really easy to wrap it in foil or grease proof paper with other veggies, lemon, herbs etc.
Soy, garlic and ginger is a nice marinade. You could add chillies to yours for something more spicy
It's also nice poached then cooled in a salad, made into salmon cakes, added to quiche etc.0 -
I made fish parcels last night and being very mse used frozen basa fillets from Aldi. I think once you start putting flavourings onto fish it can be a waste of money buying expensive fish that you can't really taste.
You can put what you like in the parcels but I used grated ginger, garlic, lime juice, soy sauce and a few veg. Last night I used courgette, mushrooms, mange tout and spring onion but I've used peppers and broccoli before. Just wrap very loosely in foil and cook in the oven following instructions.0 -
Aldi' frozen basa is good value, but for me needs well seasoned or flavoured. Your parcels sound lovely maman.
Their frozen smoked haddock is really nice too. I like it with cheese sauce. Or made into kedgeree.
Is shellfish an option? A prawn Thai curry can be mild.0 -
If you were veggie, look at Kedgeree as a main meal. It's the closest to food that looks like what you're used to.
I stick to fish fingers. Quick, easy, tasty
Crab's lovely - white meat. Pick up a "dressed crab" and it's all been cleaned/gutted and sorted out, then packed back into the clean shell and sealed with clingfilm. You can eat that on its own, with a salad, or in a baguette/sandwich, or you can use the crab to make crabcakes etc.0 -
I recently started using Lemon Sole. It's really easy to cook and doesn't stink the place out. Fry in butter/oil, skin down for 3 mins and then flip over and fry for 2 mins. Ready. You can season it with whatever you like.0

Cod, certainly Non Icelandic0

Trout is quite delicate, salmon is really versatile - you can poach it and put it with salad or watercress. And it is fab for fishcakes (home-made you can start with lots of potato and other veg and whatever % of fish you are comfortable with). I like also like this:

https://www.homemadebyyou.co.uk/recipes/main-courses/zesty-trout-with-warm-bean-salad
Made them both - ate them both - I have been veggie for over 30 years but had medical prob that meant I had to look at diet and supplements. Can't do any fish apart from trout/salmon myself - wish I was more comfortable with eating white fish but, you work with what you have lol!2022 | Back to the fold - need a Money Saving mojo reboot!

I'm not a great fish eater but I do like tuna, Aldis frozen tuna is nice. I see you don't have an Aldi close by but you could always try lidl, there prices are quite similar.
I've also made my own fish cakes in the past, which turned out quite nice. Poached tuna and basa but any fish that you prefer would be OK. Steam or boil sweet potatoes and finely diced red onion, mash the fish into the potato and onion and shape into patties, you can either lightly fry these or bake in the oven on grease proof paper,0 -
Thanks very much all for your brill suggestions, loads of ideas here! Definitely want to try fish cakes, and will have a go at some of the other suggestions over the next week or soMortgage received 21/12/2018
