Nexus 7 2012 Android version

I've just upgraded to the 2013 version of the Nexus 7.
So I've cleared down and rebuilt my old 2012 version that had Android 6 on it. Currently the latest version available.
As it's still usable I'll probably pass it onto some unsuspecting family member.
But I've noticed that it's reloaded with Android version 5 on it. This was no particular surprise as I then expected to be able to manually update it to version 6. But it doesn't appear to be offering it. Any ideas please?

Depends upon the firmware you have put on it .0

The last version of Android offered for the 2012 Nexus 7 by Google is version 5. It will not update further and no other version will or has been offered. Any other version of Android would have to be sourced from a third party and then installed by the user.0

Cliddy - as above either your memory has failed you or someone has installed an unofficial ROM (nothing wrong with that). The last official Android version for the 2012 Nexus 7 is version 5, as above. The 2013 Nexus 7 is stuck at version 6 officially.0

SWMBO has a N7 2012 ... I reverted it to 4.4 Kitkat as it struggled badly with Lollipop.0
