Switching energy suppliers but meter is not registered

We recently had our meters changed from prepay meters to normal pay monthly smart meters with british gas. After looking at british gas tariffs realised they were extortionate. However when we tried to switch to a new supplier they informed us that our electric meter was not on the national register. I've told british gas but it's been a month now and we still can't switch suppliers, effectively stuck with british gas on their extortionate tariff.

Is there anything I can do? Are they breaking any sort of rules? Should I push for a discount, matching the lower tariff?

Thanks for the help!

It's takes time for the information on meter changes to get through the system before listing on the registers. ( A National one for Gas and Regional one's for Elect ) But sometimes the system can go awry

However what you can do is Switch the Gas supplier now and the Elec later on, to either the same new supplier or a different one

You can check progress at any time by Googling " Who supplies my Electricity" - This will give the phone no.of your particular Regional Elec Register and a quick phone call will tell you wether or not your new Elec meter is registered, as soon as it is, you can Switch

Personally I'd give BG a further 14 days to get the meter registered, and if it's not done and dusted by then WRITE a letter headed Complaint - This puts BG on notice that they have 56 days to sort it out, and if they don't you go to the Ombudsman on day 57
