Savings over £35,000

I live in Spain and have more than £35,000 saved in one bank in the UK. I did not realise that any amount over £35,000 is at risk if the bank became insolvent. I would like to transfer the excess to a different Bank/building society. Would it be possible to open another, new, savings account in a UK building society for the excess even though I permanently live in Spain and have no address in the UK. Also, could I do this without returning to the UK, i.e. on line or by telephone?
