    I was working at some ones house who had been to nashville, and she said a note on the inside of her hotel door said this;

    At night under no circumstances open this door, if anybody knocks. If they claim to be room service or other hotel staff, phone reception before opening the door and check if anyone has been sent to your room before opening the door!

    She said the place was rough as hell and they were glad to get out of there.

    I dont know what area they stayed in, it was close to graceland as thats why they went.

    Hopefully some one else will give you better news about the place.

    Edit, I just had a quick look on VT here the page

    I've seen the same notice on hotel doors in many different places in the US - even in really nice areas. It did worry us the first time but I think the hotel is covering it's backside plus reminding tourists that they are in a city, crime does happen unfortunately, and people on holiday often let their guard slip.

    Page: I hope you get this reply to balance your view. I was lucky enough to go to Nashville last year when I won a Jack Daniels competition.
    It was wonderful! I really cannot praise it too highly BUT I think to really enjoy it you should really be anafficiando of small town america as it is chock full of those quirky little americanisms that can be both charming and irritating.
    The people are lovely - very friendly and with none of that fake Florida friendliness going on - they are genuinely interested in a chat and always have time. You will see old time bible bashers aged 70 - 5 years preaching on street corners but they do not accost you.
    Every restaurant has live music all day until late. the best bars/restaurants get very full later tho and its usually standing room only and pretty hot and sweaty.
    You must try their bar-b-q which is served everwhere and in this case is the name of their favourite chicken dish not necessarily anything to do with a grill.
    You must not eat grits as they are defintely poisonous to the British palate!! (just joking but they are yuk)
    If you can visit the Jack Daniels museum tour. did you know the factory (included in the tour) is in the only DRY county in the south? So, no freebie, sadly, but you can get high on the smell. And its very interesting too.
    Its hot, take sunblock.
    Nashville aiport is the most boring in the world I know cos I was delayed there for 6 hours!
    have a great time. I am jealous and would love to go back.

    cheap as the proverbial! don't forget to tip! but do remember in the shops that you pay tax at the till so prices can add up surprisingly quickly.
    when I go to the states I always stock up on lots of drug store stuff from chewing gum - they have some interesting flavours! - to the more expensive (over here) brands of make-up and nail varnish. I'll leave it you whether you tip your wife off about that! Also knickers and tights are soooo much cheaper you can save a fortune. Hanes are a good reliable brand.
