Aldi - not a heathy option 700 calories!

I been a fan for over a year of a salad bowl sold by Aldi. Chicken salad with mango sauce, a chicken and bacon version etc. They were £1.49 and a bargain as a work lunch. Obviously popular as most folk in my local store seemed to have them in their trollies.
They have been changed - new packaging - its ok, 20p more expensive - fine, they were a bargain even with that. But the difference is the change in the content - they all now have pasta and very rich mayo - with nearly 700 calories where they used to be 2 or 300. I mean how do you even get 700 calories in a salad bowl that's half filled with lettuce and grated carrot
Really unhappy with the change so tweeted my feedback and got a reply that suggested I've given them a compliment! (closed twitter feed so viewers can't see our tweets - only their replies) Patronising pill*cks.

This tweet? https://twitter.com/MrChrisDrew/status/782978591504134144@MrChrisDrew Thanks for getting in touch, we're sorry to hear you feel this way. We will pass your feedback on to the relevant department.
The response doesn't seem in any way like you have them a compliment.0 -
Really? You are worried about the number of calories in it?!
Aren't you worried about what the following are and how they provide you with nutrients/interact with your body:
Glucose Syrup?
Acidity Regulator?
Lactic Acid?
Chicken Carcass?
Sodium Ascorbate?
Sodium Nitrate?
Seems a bit far from a simple chicken and bacon salad don't you think?!
Plus, it is only 687.8 calories per 380g serving. Plus you probably chuck a bit of it away anyway, plus you are not obliged to eat the mayonnaise part of it
So yep, enjoy eating your chicken carcass filled salad
P.S. I wouldn't be surprised if the bacon had been "reformed", even despite it not saying so on the packet....
These pre-packed salads are a bit more minging than you'd first expect sometimes! BUT, this one from Aldi isn't the worst I've seen!0 -
Over priced muppet food. Better off with a packet of cherry tomatoes. No carp in that and half the price!0

Here, I'll help you out
Go buy two good sized chicken fillets, a lettuce, box of cherry toms, pack of three peppers, whatever you fancy and a jar of mango sauce
Take the fillet, cut in half through the middle and flatten with heal of hand
Season with whatever you have
Fry or grill quickly on a hot heat so you get wee charred bits
Take a lunch box
Make a salad, add a little dressing
Slice some of the chicken thinly over the top
Add croutons, seeds, whatever you like ( bits of fruit even)
Add a spoon of mango sauce
And voila, enough salads for the week, half the price ( maybe) and you know exactly what's in it
Enjoy0 -

Indeed, that sounds spot on!
I don't think it would be half price, but I would reckon the food bill would come to £10-£12 roughly and you'd have enough meat and veg (including dressing like mango sauce, which may be negligible depending on expiry dates when opened) to cook between 3-5 salads (spices are almost negligible because of multi uses). The obvious benefit being that you are eating FRESHER ingredients. I would say it could range between £2 to £4 per home-made salad.
And I'd steer clear of bacon in salads, but if you felt it necessary then you can get it for £1-£2 which will easily cover 7 salads (only limit being the expiry date or the number of rashers!)0 -

If someone enjoys bacon in salads I would recommend buying one of the highly-flavoured types of hams. If you buy something strong and salty like prosciutto you only need a small amount chopped up into tiny pieces to get tons of flavour.
As someone who doesn't like salads sitting in dressing for ages I recommend investing in one of those salad lunch boxes that has a separate compartment for the dressing.0 -
That's so annoying when you had a routine and now they've changed it. I wouldn't want a 700 calorie lunch daily either. You could probably get a nice salad from a cafe or subway but as it's been mentioned it might be as cheap and healthier to make your own salad box.0

Pre prepared salads never look appealing to me. Can't see the point either when you can throw a salad together in less than 5 mins in the morning. I do mine whilst waiting for the kettle to boil for my morning tea. Meat or fish and a boiled egg (done the night before) with salad, pickles and dressing, twice the amount for half the cost, and no nasty surprises either ! I sometimes add pasta, potatoes or quinoa too to bulk it out a bit.0
