Help. Moving home gas supplier

Hi. I moved into my new build home 5 years ago which was built in the middle of a field on a new build estate.

When we moved in I contacted the various suppliers to try and track down who our suppliers would be. Water and electricity eventually came forward but gas kept on insisting that my house didn't exist.

I then left it as naively I thought everything was sorted as everything in the house worked, so assumed we didn't have gas.

5 years on and we have now sold our house and I have just found a gas meter in the middle of garden shrubs, which I didn't even know was there.

What should I do please?

I couldn't afford a 5 year gas bill- do the gas company have go just swallow this?

What about the new owners, I can't we that they should be liable for usage pre their ownership.

Thoughts?

    " so assumed we didn't have gas" ??????? !
Are you saying that in the house you used Electricity only, and that there were no gas appliances fitted, ie Gas Boiler for Hot water & Heating, Gas hob/cooker ?
If this is the case, the only gas billing you might be liable for is the Daily Standing charge and even this is very argueable, and that discounts that it is likely that there is no pipe connection between the meter and your house.

Just in case that at sometime in the future a supplier appears waving a bill, write down a log as best you can remember of who and when you contacted in your efforts to find the gas supplier, and also take a photo of the meter
Though why you were attempting to find a gas supplier to an all Electric house remains an unanswered question
