I think the spec you've given is a bit broad. Most diesels will do that journey quite easily, it depends what else you're after. ie image, performance, frugality etc, would help to narrow your choices.matched betting: £879.63

re connor, dont get me wrong my merc is tip top, new cluch, brake discs & pads within 3k miles, spotless exhaust and good bodywork etc and really good turning circle etc but 25mpg would be a good day and that means the fuel saving on a 50mpg eqivelent motor would be £1500 odds a year.
No problem. Was just really making the point that she'll still be up to it despite the age especially being designed as an Autobahn stormer.
Totally agree with you about the savings though although to get a 50MPG motor, you'll be looking at something relatively new so the cost of the purchase and additional insurance, tax, maintenance could outweigh the saving in fuel. That and the fact I enjoy driving the Capri is why I've not got another car to do the commuting in.0 -
well i gave up on the idea of lpg as cars were about £2k more than normal cars so i just got this brute and said sod it, ill pay the extra in petrol.

You will probably find that a thumping V8 will tick over at about 2000rpm on the motorway anyway!
My boss had a T reg BMW 535i V8 that did 34mpg cos it used to sit on the motorway day in, day out. We used it as our pool car too!0 -

whilst LPG might be cheaper to run you lose out on boot space AND you get worse performance and fuel economy
Not really;
I ran a Volvo S60 2.4 Bi-fuel LPG and the performance was the same. It just did 28mpg on gas, rather than 30 on petrol. But at 37pence per litre for gas, apposed to 94pence per litre for petrol, it was a no-brainer situation!0 -
...and as for boot space, its the same as a standard Volvo S60. Just where the spare wheel would be, it was full of gas tanks and a small compressor and can of gunk for doing a quick puncture repair.0

I second the vote for an Octavia. You see hoards of them as private hire cars for a reason0
