Need advice on picking the best travel insurance for Spain.

Hello everyone!

I need the advice of those of us on this forum with experience of holidaying in Spain. I will be there for six days this month. As a newbie to travelling outside the UK, I just haven't looked into this area. So, I will be really grateful to your advice.

I just applied for the European Health Insurance Card. As I did this online, it might not arrive before I leave for Spain. So, is there a quicker way to get one? I read elsewhere that the Post Office might give them. Is that correct?

Here are my requirements or details that might be useful:

1. The trip will last six days.
2. I have no major health conditions.
3. It is a writers' retreat. So, I will be taking a laptop. So, I need cover in case anything were to happen to it.

Do I have to be careful about anything?

Are there any products or companies that were good to you?

I thank you in advance for your advice.

EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance, you can easily google cases of people being taken to an emergency hospital which is private and not the local public one that EHIC covers and being left with the bill. It obviously doesn't cover loss of items or flights etc

For 6 days just get a proper policy for a week, there are loads of companies that'll give you sufficient cover for a few quid - just make sure the item cover has a high enough single item limit for the laptop

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

The problem you may have on the health cover is that any insurer will expect you to have an EHIC card and for that to cover part of any claim that you make - if you don't have one they will probably pay out less than the full claim amount. Check online, it may be that because you have applied you can get the EHIC cover anyway by providing a UK contact number for the provider in Spain to call, that was the case when I lost my card and had to request a replacement.

If you have a problem abroad needing medical attention and don't have your EHIC card there is advice here:

What should I do if, during or before my visit, I suddenly realise that I have forgotten or lost my card?

If you have forgotten or lost your card, you can ask your local authority to fax or e-mail you a provisional replacement certificate. This will give you the same entitlement as the card does.
