If you had asked that 10 years ago then download.com had all that stuff which was checked and malware and virus free etc etc.

Then they started bundling installers with the software and its now on my do not trust list.

As above, download everything direct from the originators website.

These are the best reviews for what you are seeking.

Any of these programmes can be downloaded direct from the manufacturer, which is the safest way to do it. I personally do not recommend McAfee, Norton or AVG, but that is only my opinion. Others may differ.

As above download.cnet.com - search for what you want and ignore their download link, it's had a download assistant and installer for some time now and that's what you get if you click on their download link.

Instead, find what you want and, if there's no direct download link offered, search for it with google and download it direct from the publisher's website.

For example you want the program happyme.exe published by MYsoftware - search for mysoftware and download it direct from the website if it exists.

Another one is softonic.com or sourceforge.net for another.

When was that? I've not had any problems when using it..

    I always use FileHippo.com and Softpedia.com.
  • I've found Filehippo and Snapfiles to be trouble-free, but the best way to get basic software downloaded and installed is still ninite.com. If you've never used it, take a look - the range available is limited but it covers all the basics and avoids all the unwanted crapware.

While I would always use the provider's website if possible I'd agree that filehippo generally seems to be a pretty reliable alternative.
